Antique Millinery Hat Stretcher
This is a stunning antique millinery solid wood and steel hat stretcher, late 1800’s / early 1900’s French La Chapelière (The Hat Maker).
This is a stunning example and you can tell the stretcher is heaped in history, and it has had a productive life handled by hard working artisans.
The reason items like this are still in use after over 100 year is because they are practical, robust, but most interesting of all they have a tactile charm that draws you to touch them. If on display in a room it takes centre stage drawing the eye and provoking conversions about a time when things were individually made with love and respect for the fabric and the customer.
Condition - used condition and has wear, scratches, dints and the measure plate writing has worn. All as you would expect from an used item of this age. It's in working condition. The metalwork has had the rust removed and the wood has received some loving care. The stretcher can be used as a decorative item, or by a milliner to produce hats once again (as it has been doing for over 100 years).
