Description
For sale is a really wonderful example of the work of the famous British artist, George Morland (1763-1804).
The piece is entitled "A shipwreck off the Isle of Wight". The canvas is 36 inches x 24 inches and 42 inches x 34 inches overall in it's contemporary frame.
It has been re-lined, but it appears an old and very professional job. The piece is signed a third of the way up on the left in typical Morland fashion.
This piece has been sold twice in the last 20 years by Christies, so the provenance on this painting is cast iron.
There is also some research which suggests this painting was sold in 1805 by William Spencer, the lately deceased owner of the Garrick's Head pub in Bow, London.
Moreland lodged there and it is known he paid for his keep in paintings (Morland was constantly in debt).
It is believed this piece, painted in the Garrick's Head in Bow, was used as payment.
