17th century oak coffer with moulded edge and frieze. Pin hinges worn but not replaced . The century that this piece was produced in was a tumultuous and bloody time when families and neighbours turned against each other during English Civil War. Charles 1 1625-1649 the English Civil war between the Royalists (The Cavaliers) and the followers of Oliver Cromwell (The Roundheads). Charles 1 was defeated, captured and beheaded for treason in 1649. The English Monarchy was abolished and the Commonwealth of England declared. Life became plainer and simpler and this was reflected in the more sombre furniture of this time. Wood carving was little used and furniture became utilitarian, decoration was frowned upon. The monarchy was restored in 1661 (Charles 2nd).

Often used by people who travelled with their belongings these early antique English oak coffers or chests lend themselves to being very versatile and have found their way over the years many types of usage. Often highly decorative, (occasionally families would save and have a carving added as and when they could afford it). They blend in well with other oak period furniture, or with modern surroundings, displaying their versatility as a focal point, coffee table, side table, or as storage in halls, corridors, bedrooms, sitting rooms. These genuine antique English oak coffers come in a variety of sizes and can range from substantial proportions and weight to the small and quite delicate. The decoration range from very simple if any at all or very intricate each one skilfully hand carved by a craftsman. The details from different regions and timelines give a clue to their origins, and occasionally to their family ties.
