Antique Hand Knotted Persian Heriz Large Carpet

During the last quarter of the 20th century, Heriz rugs originated from the East Azerbaijan region in Northwest Iran. These carpets are known for their exceptionally strong and lustrous wool, which is a result of the high copper content in the local soil. Over time, as these rugs are used, they acquire a unique quality often referred to as "singing." In modern carpet washing techniques, attempts are made to replicate this effect using acid or plant and nut finishing washes.
Early Heriz rugs typically feature large-scale, unadorned geometric motifs, often cantered around a prominent medallion. These designs were typically woven from memory by the weavers. The younger Heriz rugs continue this tradition, but with some variations. In the late 20th century, Heriz rugs began incorporating smaller motifs within the larger designs, resulting in a more intricate overall pattern. However, these rugs still maintain a limited colour palette compared to their earlier counterparts.
