Stunning Hand Knotted Turkish Enjelas rug circa Mid 1900s - rare

A fine example of a traditional Turkish rug, hailing from a region sadly no longer engaged in the large-scale production of hand-knotted rugs, making this discovery quite remarkable. The brown tones, slightly corroded—a characteristic feature of this dye and era—are a result of the iron mordant used to stabilize the dye. In my view, this corrosion enhances the rug, preserving its soft and decorative palette.
Delicately woven and adorned with a plethora of motifs and decorations, this rug captivates the observer, drawing attention toward its centre. The traditional Mehrab or prayer arch design takes precedence, surrounded by soft gold and ivory tones that form a multiple frame around the madder prayer arch. This intricate portrayal includes the depiction of incense hanging at the entrance and jugs of water, symbolizing the ritual of cleansing one's feet upon entering the mosque. Altogether, a truly beautiful rug.
